ac units

In 1902, Willis Carrier invented a device that would eventually become a staple in nearly every American home—the air conditioner. Little did he realize at that time how important his invention would become today. Think about it. How many times during your AC maintenance appointment have you said out loud, “Thank goodness for air conditioning!” Probably more often than you realize.

Of course, over the years air conditioning has changed. And with change there is often confusion. How do you separate the real cooling truths from the AC myths? That’s easy, read this blog!

The Real Truth About Air Conditioning

Confused about air conditioning and the common myths that surround this amazing invention? Don’t sweat it. We’re setting the record straight. Here are six common myths.

Myth #1

Lower the Thermostat by 10 Degrees for Quick Cooling

Nope. If your home is feeling warm, lowering it 10 degrees to “kickstart” it into becoming cooler quickly isn’t going to work. Instead, set the thermostat to the “real” temperature you want it to be. This is the most efficient cooling method, and the best way to achieve your optimal temperature.

Myth #2

A Bigger AC Unit Is Better

Not necessarily. A bigger air conditioning unit does not equal better air conditioning comfort. An air conditioning unit that is too big for the size of your home will short cycle on and off repeatedly. This results in an overworked system that uses more energy than necessary and increases your energy bills. When installing a new AC unit, be certain your technician fits your home with the proper sized unit. (Call ARS and we’ll guarantee your cooling unit fits perfectly.)

Myth #3

Thermostat Placement Doesn’t Matter

Improper thermostat placement is another big mistake homeowners make. Thermostats should always be placed on an interior wall that is away from direct sunlight, doors, and windows. Any reputable HVAC technician understands the importance of placing a thermostat in the right spot.

Myth #4

Keep Your Temperature the Same 24/7

There is no need to worry about energy bills increasing if you adjust your thermostat occasionally. For instance, increasing your temperature a few degrees when you are away for a few hours will result in better savings. (This is recommended rather than turning the system off totally.) Of course, your best bet for optimal savings and comfort is to invest in a programmable thermostat. These devices will automatically adjust your comfort to higher degrees when you’re away and keep things cool while you are at home.

Myth # 5

Air Conditioning Makes You Sick

Germs and viruses make you sick. Not air conditioning. In fact, AC according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, that has top grade air filters can help reduce allergens which leads to better indoor air quality and fewer allergy triggers.

Myth #6

Air Filters Only Need to be Replaced Once a Year

Even the very best air filters accumulate extra dust, dirt, and allergens over time. When they are dirty your airflow is blocked, and your cooling system must work overtime. Changing your air filters every three or four months is the secret to cleaner air, energy savings, and better airflow.
