The Code One Fund is a general fund for all Indianapolis local officers injured while on duty. Officer Santos Cortez is one of those officers. On June 11, 2012, while responding to a 911 call, Officer Cortez was struck by a drunk driver and ejected through the passenger side window of his squad car leaving him paralyzed. After enduring 23 surgeries, including 4 spinal fusions, Officer Cortez, his wife and 3 children will finally be moving into a new handicapped accessible home that was built by Drees Homes, in part through funds raised by the Code One Fund and donations from the community. The family has been getting by the last few years living in an apartment with very limited space that was not very wheelchair friendly.
The Indianapolis branch employees donated over $400 of their own money including the $200 bonus the branch earned for their Wellness Screening. They even used reward credits they had from their Sam’s Club account to purchase items to fill the pantry and freezer for the Cortez family. “It was a pleasure to help this officer and his family. I’m very proud of my team for stepping up and giving back,” said General Manager Kerry Tidwell.
In addition to stocking their pantry and freezer, ARS Indy will also be constructing a play set in the backyard for the children with help from Home Depot.
